QUARANTINED EPISODE TWO
QUARANTINED
It was like a dream for James. He wanted to pinch himself to be sure this was not real. He moved closer to ensure that it was not 'Maria' the Kenyan soap opera he was watching, but no, it was real. He dropped the rose flowers, wiped his face in disbelief, and held his chest in pain. Jane and Brian were still staring at James.
"Beb, who's this?" Asked Brian while holding tightly to the white duvet stripped with black lines.
"Get out of my bed!" Commanded Jane. "You heard her, get out." Shouted Brian. Jane looked at Brian. "Not him, I meant you!" Said Jane in a low but harsh voice that only a calibrated fool would continue lying in that bed in the quest of acquiring the most fantasized title deed.
"Why?" asked Brian. " I thought we shared something strong. That's why you gave me your extra key to your house. After all I have done for you, this is how you pay me back?" Acclaimed Brian but Jane was still staring at James.
"James what are you doing here, I thought...." before Jane could finish her statement, "you thought what Jane? Eh! You thought I had called it off! Who breaks up with her man with whom they are supposed to share a great and bright future together only to come and sleep with another man? I thought I had wronged you, but no it was him. You would have told me that you found another man instead of stapling my mind with the idea that you thought you knew me." Lamented James.
Jane pulled off the white cotton bed sheets, tied them around her breast and jumped out of the bed." Listen and listen good dude, you have no right to come to my house and trespass through my sacred bedroom and lecture me on how to run my life. I quit everything with you, so bro read my lips. It's over between us, so please do not bother yourself fighting over a lost battle because this girl you see here, is gone forever!"
Those words were like a burning spear to James, they all splashed in his eardrums with so much hard and infinitive echo. He could feel the vibration of the heavy words right from his cochlea to his weak heart which at the moment was beating at a very slow speed. Jane had indeed triumphed to break it. But again, she didn't know why James had followed him to her house.
Brian was still part of the scene witnessing the cruelty afflicted to James. He was like the Pharisees rejoicing on the crucifixion of the Messiah as Jane hurled insults at James. Yes, he hated him, he hated James for interrupting a very crucial ritual. He was just about to pluck the title deed when James rudely interrupted.
He wished nothing for James but the worst. Quick death. You understand that feeling when an eagle grabs the only piece of chicken remaining in a wedding reception that you so much contributed, just when you've placed it on your dry lips, ready to crash it. That hatred, the painful saliva that is horribly generated by your glands, that's the disgust Brian had towards James. 'How could he intrude my sweet moment with my queen. No, I must ensure you pay for this.' This is what was bubbling in Brian's mind. "You heard her, leave, you confused idiot." Shouted Brian.
James looked at Jane, at this moment, Brian didn't matter, he meant nothing to him. His heart was with Jane, his love. "You're sure you want me to leave right?" "Yes, now!" Answered Brian. "I wasn't talking to you, I believe Jane can speak for herself. '' interrupted James . "You heard him right, yes I want you to leave and forget about us." Said Jane.
This was the worst and the most tormenting moment for James.
He had tried to be the best man to Jane, but she had made her decision and just like he had given her his word when they first met in a party along Mombasa Road, that whenever she became tired of him, she would not hide the feeling but open up to him. Well, the time had come and he had to live to his word because as always, his word was and will always be his bond. His own words had come back to haunt him. But then, he thought to himself, where there's no trust, where there's no adoration and where there is despise and dishonesty, love can never find its way to triumph.
"Okay, I will go, but what about..." "what about what!!!?" Jane interrupted James. "Just go please, go" she pushed him towards her leaving room, the house that James paid half the rent. " Sweetheart please do not do this to me, I love you Jane. Please, remember the good moments including our..." before James could conclude his statement, Brian drugged him out of the house, grabbed the rose flowers and threw them at his face and shut the door. It was painful, a feeling beyond any explanation.
No scale could measure the embarrassment weighing on James’ heart, but he still held the flowers, tears streaming out of his eyes while nodding his head. He stood at the door, thought of crying out Jane's name loud but his voice could not allow him. He walked towards the gate, turned and looked at the window in which Jane was looking at him through. She wondered why James had come to her house. "Maybe he had to ask for us to get back together.' She consoled herself.
There was a part of her that tried to convince her to call him back but she resisted it. She still wanted to go on with her experiment. She wanted to settle down, but she could only marry a man who would fight for her regardless of the situation.
Brian was also part of the experiment. She went back to her bedroom, held Brian’s hands, kissed him on his forehead and asked him to leave. " But beb, I can't leave you in this state!" Acclaimed Brian. But Jane wanted to be left alone, he put on his shirt and banged the door on his way out. Jane woke up and sat on her couch. As she sat down, the picture of her five year old angelic daughter was glaring at her. She was filled with some spasms of guilt but she chose to ignore. Her phone rang, it was Ex-J, she ignored it. A text message came in, still from Ex-J but she still bashed it.
She loved them both, and yes she was confused on who to choose. Both men were industrious but Brian was more wealthy than James. She was almost getting the answer to her expedition.
Three weeks passed and she was surprised that James had not called, neither had he sent any message. She went to her contact list to search for his number, in the process she remembered he had sent a text message which she ignored. She decided to read it before calling.
" My love, I am sorry I am not the right man you thought you could spend the rest of your life with, and guess what, you are right! When I came to your house, I came to tell you that you were right. But it's good you have found my replacement, though so quick but I am glad you're happy, because that's what matters to me. Your happiness is mine to celebrate. However, I was diagnosed with a cardiovascular condition five months ago, a condition that greatly affected my heart functioning. I was supposed to undergo a heart transplant this month but I could not gather enough money for this operation to take place. I only have three weeks to live, please take care of Princess our daughter. You both mean everything to me. If you've chosen Brian as your man and you trust him, then I give you my blessing but please ask him to be a good father to our daughter. Always know you both mean everything to me. You both hold a special place in my heart. Goodbye my love. God bless you."
Jane did not believe these words. It was as if she was being bombarded and crushed by chinese tractor.
"No this cannot be true." She exclaimed. She dialled the number, it went through but a woman picked the call. "Hello, this is Jane, James' girlfriend, can I talk to him please!?" There was silence from the other side. Then came the bombshell of the century, " I am sorry James is dead"
Jane's heart felt really quarantined!
